Faith Tabernacle Church of Chester has long been a beacon of hope and light to members of the community since they began outreach efforts to the city of Chester through it’s Mission of Care program in 1984. Many may remember the late Rev. Dr. Margaret L. Wortham, founder of Faith Tabernacle Church and the Mission of Care outreach program. She worked tirelessly to make sure the needs of individuals and families in the community were met. The mission continues as her grandson and current pastor of FTC, Pastor Nathan Jacobs, leads the ministry through its outreach efforts. “We care greatly about the spiritual needs of individuals and families, but we also believe it’s equally important to follow the principles of Jesus to meet the physical needs of people too,” said Pastor Nate.
Throughout the pandemic, Faith Tabernacle has been helping those in need by providing essentials such as food, diapers, clothing, school supplies and hygiene products. They’ve also been providing hot meals to families and individuals through their socially distanced grab and go events. “Our grandmother and former pastor, Mother Wortham, taught us that by giving back, we are being an extension of God’s hand and love to people,” said Catrina Jacobs, Outreach Coordinator. “Those in need deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” she said.
Ahead of the 2020 Christmas holiday, Faith Tabernacle adopted 75 families through its Mission of Care program. “With the support of our community partners, donors and volunteers, we adopted the families and were able to give them essential items and gifts,” said Pastor Nate. “Some families received new winter coats and children’s clothing while other families received laptops, art supplies, bikes and toys,” he said. All families received winter items such as hats, clothes, socks and scarves. Throughout the months of November and December, Faith Tabernacle volunteers have been delivering food boxes and baskets to families in need throughout the city. One gift recipient wrote to the church, “Thank you so much for the beautiful and quality presents your church provided for my family. I was overwhelmed by your generosity and this has made the financial burden light for my family.”
“While the saying goes, actions speak louder than words, we also believe in letting our faith speak louder than words or putting our faith to work” said Pastor Nate. “We don’t do this for recognition but to stand on the principles of Jesus. “Jesus shared a parable in which he said, I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me;” “This is what it’s all about,” said Pastor Nate. “With God’s help and guidance, we will continue to serve our community with respect and love while meeting their spiritual and physical needs.”
